If you are a native Spanish speaker learning English, you have probably fallen into the "To

Be" trap at least once. It usually happens when you are trying to express how you feel, or when someone asks about your age.
In Spanish, it is perfectly natural to use the verb tener (to have) for these situations. You "have" 30 years (tengo 30 años), you "have" hunger (tengo hambre), and you "have" cold (tengo frío).
But in English, we don't possess our age or our physical states. We are them. If you translate directly from Spanish to English, you will end up saying things like "I have 30 years" or "I have hot"—which sounds very confusing to native English speakers!
Let's break down how to escape this common trap and sound more natural.
The Golden Rule: States of Being, Not Possessions
In English, we use the verb To Be (am, is, are) to describe a state of being. Think of it this way: your age and your feelings are descriptions of who you are in this exact moment, not objects that you carry around in your pocket.
Here are the three main categories where you need to drop "have" and use "to be":
1. Talking About Age
Never use "have" for age in English. You do not possess your years!
Don't say: I have 25 years.
Say: I am 25 years old. (Or simply: I am 25.)
2. Physical States (Hunger, Thirst, Temperature)
When your body feels a certain way, use "to be" + an adjective.
Hunger: I am hungry. (Not: I have hunger.)
Thirst: She is thirsty. (Not: She has thirst.)
Temperature: We are cold / I am hot. (Not: We have cold.)
Tiredness: They are sleepy. (Not: They have sleep.)
3. Mental States and Feelings
This applies to being correct, incorrect, or afraid.
Fear: He is scared / afraid. (Not: He has fear.)
Being Right/Wrong: You are right / I am wrong. (Not: You have reason.)
Caution: Be careful! (Not: Have care!)
